Active matter

Some materials have the ability to spontaneously create organized structures based on information in their molecules. Some macromolecules can self-assemble and then be coerced into forming useful structures similar to those found in electronic circuits. The vision: much of the hard work involved in producing ultrasmall structures could be carried out by the molecules themselves, leading to radically new materials with applications from healthcare to nanolithography. Bringing new methods into practice, the Institute for Molecular Engineering is positioned at the forefront of this effort.
