The University of Chicago Campaign: Inquiry and Impact concluded on December 31, 2019. Thanks to the deep commitment of our donors and volunteers to the meaning, values, approach, and impact of the University, we have exceeded both our original target of $4.5 billion and our expanded $5 billion goal. We have also exceeded our goal to engage 125,000 alumni during the Campaign. In February, we will report final numbers of dollars raised and alumni engaged.
This Campaign has supported priorities in the College, Divisions, Schools, Departments, Institutes, Centers, and programs.
It has supported research, education, and impact – through discovery and innovation in science, medicine, and engineering; in understanding and advancing our societal structures and organizations including policy, governments, business, law, economics, education, and urban practice; in deepening and expanding our understanding of human cultures, art, literatures, religions, and histories.
The Campaign has enabled us to invest in students – in greatly expanding our financial aid program in the College to be not only need blind, but to meet students’ full need with no debt expectations for them or their families; enabling us to expand our financial support for graduate and professional students; providing for greatly increased diversity among our students; and a powerful array of programs designed to help students connect their very distinctive UChicago education to their future lives.
It has expanded our ability to invest in our faculty – both senior faculty and those at the early stages of their careers - through a wide variety of research support reflective of the extraordinary breadth, depth, and originality of our faculty’s work.
It has supported our deep engagement with the City of Chicago and the welfare of its residents, as well as the University’s commitment to a greatly extended global engagement. It has expanded the University’s position as an intellectual destination and has enabled new partnerships and affiliations to deepen and broaden the University’s work and impact.
The University of Chicago is a distinctive institution that has been committed to rigorous inquiry, open discourse, free expression, and intellectual challenge in research and education as the foundation of all we do. These enduring values and the willingness to see them realized in new ways have sustained our powerful research and education environment that has changed the lives of so many for the better. I am deeply grateful for the generosity of our alumni, friends, parents, trustees, faculty, and students during this campaign. Without such generosity in the past, during this campaign, and in the future, the University would not be able to fulfill its highest aspirations. I thank each of you for your commitment and the impact you have made on your University.
