Strongin House will be part of the new Campus North Residential Commons, scheduled to open at the start of the 2016–17 academic year.

Alexis and Steven Strongin House

When Steve and Alexis Strongin were students in the College, they lived in the Shoreland, which offered a wonderful view of Lake Michigan but no dining facilities. This came rushing back to the Strongins in 2015 as they strolled past Campus North, then under construction.

“I knew, but had not actually internalized, it is where our first meal contracts were,” says Steve Strongin, AB’79, AM’82. Like many Shoreland residents, the Strongins ate at Pierce Dining Commons, which once occupied the space where Campus North stands today. It’s fitting, then, that Strongin House, which recognizes the opportunities they have created for today’s undergraduates, rises from the foundation of their own time in the College.

After graduating from UChicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine, Alexis Strongin, AB’80, SM’82, MD’84, focused her career on children in underserved communities, first in Chicago and, after the couple relocated to New York, in the Bronx. The head of global investment research at Goldman Sachs, Steve Strongin previously worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, ultimately serving as the director of monetary policy research. His research has focused on economic policy and investing.

The Strongins have a history of support for the College—including the creation of the Strongin Family Fund for Students with Financial Need: Goldman Sachs Gives, to support Odyssey and middle-income students with summer internships in the not-for-profit sector, or for research and study abroad opportunities—and they have created several programs at Pritzker and the University of Chicago Medicine dedicated to improving health in urban communities.

Both Strongins are life members of the Visiting Committee on the College and Student Activities, and Dr. Strongin serves on the Visiting Committee to the Division of the Biological Sciences and the Pritzker School of Medicine
