Through main stage productions, audience enrichment programs, and collaborations across the University of Chicago, Court Theatre reexamines, reenvisions, and renews classic texts that pose enduring and provocative questions that define the human experience. Underlying this mission is Court’s continuing vision for the Center for Classic Theatre, a national leader in the creation, production, and study of classic theatrical works.
Court Theatre and its patrons fulfill this mission in three ways:
- Through productions and programs supporting the rigorous exploration of dramatic texts, including the African American canon and musical theater works
- By expanding the canon of classic theater through initiatives such as the Barbara E. Franke Commissioning Program for New Classics
- By ongoing institutional strategic planning, including the possibility of an expanded state-of-the-art facility
In all its activities, Court strives to sustain an artistic environment conducive to deeply creative work.
The University of Chicago Campaign: Inquiry and Impact will raise $17 million to support initiatives through Court Theatre. For additional opportunities to support the arts, please visit the UChicago Arts and Smart Museum of Art priority sections.
